Out of the Pond

The highly anticipated Billabong Wake flick premiered last night at the Newport Beach Film Festival and it brought some of my homies out from Orlando to kick it for the week (they also star in the movie). After living in Orlando riding with these guys everyday and knowing the places they went around the world to film this movie I knew it was gonna to be off the hook. Billabong's entire team definitely stepped things up for the video, especially in terms of taking the sport new places and directions. It's dope to see them continue to push limits of what's possible on a board and not settle for the status quo.

Yokohama skimOrama Turnout

What an honor it was to have Tex Haines make a cameo appearance this past Saturday (April 25, 2009) and compete in the 2nd contest of the HASL series --- Yokohama skimOrama!!! Even though the event was held on the West side of O'ahu (HI), which is a decent drive from all the other sides of the island, we had a turnout of about 40 competitors and 80-100 supporters. The waves were not that big but, the company and scenery made up for the extent of lulls throughout the heats.
Previous to the contest, I had the opportunity to sit down at a local breakfast with Tex and Curtis (who runs DaKine in HI) to introduce them to eachother and talk about the future of skimboarding. Being in the presence of two mentors was very humbling and inspiring. All three of our intentions and topics were filled with ALOHA which is the most important aspect in collaborating ideas and building relationships. I smell InNoVaTiOn in the air so stay tuned to the most authentic skim co. around!
This was the biggest turnout for the Womens Division. There were actually 7 of us but Natalie was judging when we took this shot.

Need to get away from your typical life on the mainland? Visit hawaiiskimboardleague.com to plan a trip around one of the HASL contests and come play with our friendly league!

Next contest will be joined with Save Makena (a grassroots org) in Maui on July 11th...

*Mahalo to Ryan Tenney for snapping the sweet shot of Tex

Fiesta for Matthieu - update

If you ask Matthieu or Annie about the "fiesta night" both of them will tell you that they cannot remember it. Can anyone say KRUNK! Yes, the drinks were plentiful, the music was bumping, and the evening was fun. Good times!

Luck of the Irish

Ryan Leeson might as well be Irish as yesterday he was broad sided by another car and walked away from the accident with only a scratch. His car however was not so lucky. It is possible that the car is not going to make it. Better the car than Ryan!

Matthieu Thibaud extends his stay

The VISA process and waiting for the verdict is complete! Matthieu Thibaud has received his O-1 Visa and is legal in the United States for another 3 years. Congratulations to Matthieu and all of those that helped him earn his right to stay. He will be sending the six pack to each and everyone of you in the mail.

On another note, Skimboarding may have taken a jump forward in recognition as the Federal Government cleared Matthieu for a professional athlete VISA. One big leap forward for skimboarding in its quest for global legitimacy.

Tattoo process - phase 2

Employee Ryan has been at it again adding to the arm tattoo. Who knows where it will end?

Hobie Sports hosts history....

Coming soon to a window near you....

Hobie Sports in downtown Laguna has asked Victoria to create a mini skimboard museum, much like the one at our own canyon store. Included will be many classic photos and a mini shrine to Chris Henderson, "The Master" as my generation of skimmers reverently calls him along with a second shrine for Bill Bryan who is hands down the best skimboarder in history. No one will ever match his record of 14 wins in the annual Victoria Contest. We will have a new set of historic boards on display with a little biography on each one and as a counterpoint, Hobie will stock the complete line of Victoria Skimboards product (Pro Models to Woodies). Way back in 1976 when Peter Prietto and I started making boards, Hobie Sports in Dana Point was our first account and it was so encouraging that we have never stopped being grateful. Completion of the installation of the display is set for the end of May, however some parts may be on site in the near future.

Tattoo process

Victoria Skimboards employee Ryan Leeson flaunts his new tattoo. Step one in a sleeve process.
